My Hobby

I am an Amateur Radio Operator and received my first license in 1964 at the age of 16. My call letters were WA5KUB until Jan 2008 when I changed them to W5KUB (dropping the A). I hold an amateur extra class license and over the years I have talked to about 100 different countries around the world. I operate many different modes such as AM, FM, Single Side Band, Morse Code, Radio Teletype, Packet, and Amateur TV. I operate on HF, VHF, and UHF bands and build and experiment with microwave and satellite systems. I even participated in an experiment with NASA twenty years ago where amateur radio operators communicated with the space shuttle STS-9 on VHF frequencies. This year I made 28 successful two way contacts with Col Doug Wheelock, the commander aboard  the International Space Station. Click here.  I also hold a Federal Communications Commission First Class License with Radar endorsement.
